The sale of used cars recorded its best first half-year in history in 2024

1.8 million used cars are projected to be sold in 2025, matching the 2013 record

The used car market is showing signs of consolidation in a restrictive economic context. According to the Automotive Trade Chamber (CCA), if the current trend continues, used vehicle sales during 2025 could reach 1,800,000 units, a figure comparable to 2013, which the sector considers "the best year in history."

The organization warns that the market's performance is occurring despite the limited number of financed transactions. A CCA representative stated that the proportion of financed transactions in the sector is still very low, mainly because the rates offered by banks are not in line with projected inflation going forward.

During June, 143,191 transfers were completed, while in May there were 154,830. Buenos Aires Province topped the list in both months, followed at a considerable distance by Córdoba, where 17,888 transfers were recorded.

Regarding the best-selling models, Volkswagen Golincluding its Trend version—once again ranked as the country's best-selling used car, with 7,726 units. It was followed by Toyota Hilux (5,842), Chevrolet Corsa and Classic (4,141), and the pickups Ford Ranger (3,838) and Volkswagen Amarok (3,786).

The strength of the secondary market partly reflects the difficulty of accessing new vehicles and competitive lines of credit. However, it also demonstrates the private sector's ability to adapt to a scenario of economic uncertainty and credit restrictions that still have not found a solution in current policies, despite the improvement over the past year and a half.

Financing through secured credit has become a key tool for energizing the market. So far this year, nearly half of newly registered vehicles have been purchased through financing, doubling last year's levels. Financed sales of new vehicles grew by 99% year-over-year, while in the case of used vehicles the increase was 89%, reflecting improved access to credit and greater consumer confidence.

Secured instruments accounted for 47.2% of registrations, exceeding the average of the past five years and bringing the Argentine market closer to the standards of developed countries. Financing offered by automotive manufacturers showed notable growth, gradually displacing traditional savings plans and positioning the private sector as a central player in the recovery.

In the used segment, 8.6% of transactions were carried out with credit, and transfers through secured instruments grew by 123% year-over-year. This progress reflects greater financial inclusion and a progressive renewal of the vehicle fleet, in line with an economy that is beginning to normalize after years of imbalance.
