In recent hours, Vietnam has unveiled the project that could become the largest soccer stadium on the planet. It is Trong Dong Stadium, a colossus with a capacity for 135,000 spectators that is being built in the south of Hanoi as the centerpiece of the ambitious Olympic Sports City complex, a project whose total budget is around 28 billion pounds sterling (around 38 billion dollars at the current exchange rate).
The stadium was presented as a symbol of the country's new phase in terms of sports infrastructure and international projection. Its design is inspired by the Dong Son bronze drums, an emblem of ancient Vietnamese civilization and a representation of community spirit, strength, and historical continuity. The idea, according to those responsible for the project, is to combine cultural identity with cutting-edge technology.

Designed exclusively for soccer, Trong Dong Stadium will not have an athletics track and will feature a retractable roof of unprecedented dimensions. The project's official site emphasizes that "the need for comprehensive, large-scale, internationally standardized sports facilities is becoming increasingly urgent" in a context in which Vietnam seeks to gain prominence in regional and global competitions.
The project is part of a broader urban plan, divided into four zones, which includes new residential areas, complementary sports facilities, and an advanced transportation system to guarantee access to the site. Local authorities stress that Hanoi, as the country's political and cultural capital, must lead the development of infrastructure in line with international standards and sustainable growth.
If the project is carried out as planned, the Vietnamese stadium will surpass in capacity venues such as Rungrado 1st of May in North Korea (114,000), the future Hassan II in Morocco (115,000), and Narendra Modi Stadium in India (132,000). The long-term goal is to position the country as a potential host for top-tier events, such as a World Cup or the Olympic Games.
El nuevo estadio será parte de un plan urbano más amplio
The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place in December and the official schedule sets August 2028 as the estimated date for the stadium's completion, while the entire complex would not be ready until 2035. The government and the developers state that the impact will go beyond sports, with economic, tourism, and cultural benefits for the entire region.
With this initiative, Vietnam seeks not only to build a stadium with record capacity but also to establish an architectural icon that will place it on the map of global sports.
