Werthein met with Marco Rubio to deepen the alliance between Argentina and the US

They discussed the defense of democracy and the strengthening of the strategic alliance between both countries

Gerardo Werthein and Marco Rubio met today at the State Department in the United States to set the date for the meeting that President Javier Milei will have with Donald Trump at the White House and strengthen the strategic alliance between the libertarian government and the Republican administration.

"Secretary Rubio celebrated Argentina's continued collaboration on shared economic priorities and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening our cooperation in key sectors," said State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.

She also added: "Secretary Rubio and Minister Werthein discussed the need to continue confronting authoritarianism, particularly in Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, whose regimes threaten the national security of the United States and destabilize our hemisphere."

In this regard, the State Department spokesperson highlighted: "Both leaders emphasized their support for the brave Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan people, who continue to fight for their essential freedoms and face the oppression of authoritarian regimes and the harmful influence of malign external actors."

Latin America is a region divided from a geopolitical perspective. Under Trump's administration, the United States has Argentina as its main ally, while on the other side are Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay, in addition to the socialist dictatorships of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

In this scenario, Milei and Trump share a common agenda, which includes similar diplomatic stances in multilateral organizations like the UN and the OAS, a unified position against international terrorism, as in the case of Hamas's attack on Israel, and a similar political attitude toward the dictatorships of Nicolás Maduro, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and Daniel Ortega.

Werthein and Rubio maintain a close relationship and constant contact. The Secretary of State, of Latin origin, is knowledgeable about Argentina's situation, having been with Milei before his appointment, and understands the economic and financial needs of the government.

"President Trump wants to make it clear that if you are a friend and an ally, a partner of the United States, there are benefits for your country and your people in doing so, and we want to enter into terms of partnership," Rubio expressed yesterday.

In this context, Trump has decided that Milei will be the first Latin American president to visit him at the White House, and today the date of the meeting in Washington will be determined.
