Behind the red ribbons, roadside altars, and offerings, there is a story that combines real events and legend. Antonio Mamerto Gil Núñez was born in 1847 in Mercedes, Corrientes, and worked as a rural laborer.
According to the most widespread accounts, he was recruited to fight in the armed conflicts of the time. However, a revelation in a dream reportedly led him to refuse to shed blood.

After leaving the army, Gauchito Gil became a rebellious figure. People also attribute miraculous healings to him, as well as the defense of people who were victims of injustice. His figure began to earn respect and devotion even during his lifetime.
