A video shared on social media by content creator and independent journalist Nick Shirley has reignited the national debate about the oversight of public assistance programs in Minnesota and has caused new criticism against the Democratic governor's administration Tim Walz.
The footage, which went viral on platforms like X, Instagram, and Facebook, shows Shirley in front of a building identified as "Quality Learning Center," a daycare that, according to official documents, has received millions of dollars in state funds.
In the videos, Shirley keeps that the center allegedly received around 1.9 million dollars in fiscal year 2025 through the state Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), and nearly 4 million dollars in total in recent years.
The content creator questions the fact that the facility appears closed, with covered windows, no visible presence of children or staff, and with a sign in which the word "learning" appears misspelled. For Shirley, these elements would be indications that the place doesn't operate as an active daycare despite receiving substantial public resources.
In one of the recordings, Shirley tries to ask whether he can enroll his son in the center and states that he was turned away. Shortly afterward, a woman appears on the scene shouting that they should not open the door and accusing him of being an immigration (ICE) agent, an episode that intensified the confrontation.
It was not clear whether the woman had any connection to the daycare. Shirley identified himself as an online commentator and continued to question the destination of the funds allocated to the center.
The footage and accusations triggered an immediate reaction from Republican figures. Republican Representative Tom Emmer, a Minnesota representative and the third-ranking Republican leader in the House of Representatives, demanded explanations from Governor Walz.
In a post on X, Emmer questioned how a facility with visible irregularities could have received millions of dollars in public funds, describing the case as an example of mismanagement and lack of oversight.
