Ecuador proposed 81 climate actions between 2026 and 2035, with technical support and backing from the United Nations

The Government of President Daniel Noboa reaffirmed Ecuador's climate leadership with the official delivery of its Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The event took place on April 8, 2025, in Quito, with the participation of more than 250 national and international actors.

This roadmap includes 81 concrete mitigation and adaptation actions, reflecting the country's commitment to sustainability and compliance with the Paris Agreement. The acting minister, María Cristina Recalde, highlighted that the document was built with a participatory and decentralized approach.

The Second NDC proposes a 7% reduction in gas emissions with national resources, and up to 15% with international support. The prioritized actions cover key sectors such as energy, health, transportation, and agriculture, which are essential for adaptation to climate change.

The support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), FAO, and other multilateral organizations, highlights the technical strength of the Ecuadorian proposal. According to Inka Mattila, UNDP representative, it is an innovative model with the potential to be replicated in other countries in the region.

The formulation process began in 2023 and involved more than 2,700 people from across the country. It highlighted the inclusion of women and youth in a collective effort with a gender and intercultural approach, setting a precedent in the region.

Although Ecuador only emits 0.16% of global gases, its high climate vulnerability makes this initiative a strategic step. The new NDC not only seeks to protect natural resources but also to ensure resilient and equitable development for future generations.

With this presentation, the Government of Daniel Noboa strengthened Ecuador's commitment to the international community in the fight against climate change. This NDC consolidates the country's image as a regional benchmark for responsible, planned, and sustainable climate action.
