The Minister of Government, José de la Gasca, stated that the Colombian President Gustavo Petro was "misinformed" about last Sunday's elections, in which Daniel Noboa was reelected with 55.6% of the votes. In an interview on April 14, De la Gasca replied to the accusations of lack of legitimacy with firmness and clarity.
"They have tried to set up a facade to make it seem like there is political persecution in Ecuador," declared the minister, alluding to Petro's recent claims about alleged irregularities in the electoral process. The official defended the transparency of the system and asked the Colombian leader to "make a decision as head of state with political acumen."
Petro's statements, in which he refused to recognize the result alleging a "state of siege" during the elections, were quickly refuted. De la Gasca recalled that international observers such as the European Union and the OAS endorsed the cleanliness of the process and rejected the fraud allegations made by the correísta candidate Luisa González.
The minister also described the Colombian government's decision to offer asylum to supposed persecuted opponents as "unnecessary." "There is no blacklist, there is no persecution, what there is, is a government that acts with firmness and within the legal framework," he stated. He emphasized that Ecuador and Colombia share strategic bilateral interests that must be preserved through dialogue and truth.
