Recently, it was revealed that the father of Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate candidate from the state of Michigan, has been part of the board of an Islamic charity accused of sending money to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein since 2020.
According to the New York Post, El-Sayed's father is Imam Dr. Mohammed El-Sayed and serves on the board of Life for Relief and Development, an NGO accused by the federal government of channeling money from the United States through Jordan to ultimately send it to Iraq.
The United States Army and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided the group's operations in Baghdad in 2004 and 2006, confiscating 12 computers and 20 boxes of files because it was suspected that the organization was collaborating with terrorism. After reaching a settlement of $780,000 with the federal government in 2014, the NGO had the charges against it dropped.
