The President of the United States, Donald Trump, will attend the upcoming summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which will be held on July 7 and 8 in Ankara, Turkey, confirmed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday.

The President's participation clears up the questions that had arisen in recent months regarding Washington's commitment to the military alliance, amid isolated tensions between the United States and some of its European partners over the Western response to the conflict with Iran.

During a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rubio stated that the meeting in Ankara will be one of the most significant in NATO's recent history, as leaders will need to address fundamental disagreements regarding collective defense, military spending, and strategic cooperation.

''The United States remains a member of NATO and we will be present in Turkey to discuss all these issues. The President himself will attend the meeting of heads of state and government, where these matters will be raised with complete clarity,'' Rubio affirmed before lawmakers.

The statements come after weeks of speculation about Trump's possible absence due to his growing frustration with some European allies. The U.S. administration has repeatedly expressed its displeasure with the refusal of some member countries to support U.S.-led military operations against Iran.

According to U.S. officials, certain allies rejected allowing the use of their airspace or military facilities to support operations related to the conflict, while others abstained from participating in naval initiatives aimed at ensuring the security of commercial navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy routes.

Rubio explained that one of the President's main concerns has been the lack of cooperation from certain partners at critical moments for international security. The Secretary of State noted that some European governments limited U.S. access to strategic military bases when Washington sought to respond to emerging threats in the Middle East.

The differences have reignited a debate that Trump has pushed since his return to the White House: the need for European members of the alliance to take greater responsibility for their own defense. The President has repeatedly stated that the United States bears a disproportionate burden within NATO, both financially and operationally.

Despite the criticisms, Rubio insisted that Washington has no intention of abandoning the organization, although it does consider it essential to introduce significant changes in its functioning. ''There are issues that need to be clarified and corrected,'' he stated, describing the upcoming meeting as a decisive moment for the future of the transatlantic alliance.

From Turkey, there were also signals that Trump's participation was practically assured. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan revealed that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held several phone conversations with Trump over the past month, and in each of them, the U.S. President expressed his intention to attend the summit.

Fidan also emphasized that, despite the critical rhetoric that occasionally arises from Washington, there are no concrete indications that the United States plans to withdraw from NATO. According to the Turkish foreign minister, the pressure exerted by the U.S. administration for allies to increase their military budgets is already producing visible results in Europe.

''The Europeans have received the message and have begun to take measures to increase defense spending within NATO,'' the Turkish minister stated. He added that leaders will review in Ankara the progress made in recent months regarding the strengthening of military capabilities.

The summit will take place in an especially complex international context. Tensions in the Middle East, geopolitical disputes among major powers, and the security challenges facing Europe have increased pressure on the alliance to adapt to an increasingly volatile environment.

In this scenario, the meeting in Ankara could mark a turning point in the relationship between the United States and its European partners. Debates over burden sharing, military commitment, and strategic coordination will occupy a central place on an agenda that seeks to redefine NATO's role in the face of 21st-century challenges.

With Trump's confirmed presence, allies expect an intense but decisive discussion about the future of the organization and the balance of responsibilities within the world's main military alliance.
