The President of the United States, Donald Trump, appointed the director of federal housing finance, Bill Pulte, as the new acting director of national intelligence, replacing Tulsi Gabbard. The president made the announcement public through his Truth Social network on Tuesday morning.
Pulte is the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and president of the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - the two companies created by the U.S. government that guarantee the vast majority of mortgages in the U.S. - in addition to being one of the president's most loyal officials.
Trump stated that Pulte "has deep experience managing the most sensitive issues in the United States, the security and stability of the markets, and over $10 trillion in Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago."
Bill Pulte will take over the intelligence leadership on an interim basis.
An official with an impeccable record
The president also noted that the newly appointed intelligence chief will maintain his other positions while replacing Gabbard, who resigned a few weeks ago to support her husband in his battle against cancer. If formally nominated, Pulte would need to be confirmed by the Senate to hold the position full-time.
Among Pulte's merits is his investigation of Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook and New York Attorney General, the ultra-democrat Letitia James, for mortgage fraud. In James's case, this investigation led to formal charges against her that were later dismissed by a Democratic federal judge in November 2025 due to the illegal appointment of the prosecutor in the case.
The new head of U.S. spies also previously exposed the former Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome Powell, for not cutting the central bank's benchmark interest rates and for spending an exorbitant amount of money on renovations of the FED headquarters located in Washington DC.
