The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said that Iran is going through an accelerated financial collapse as a result of the naval blockade imposed by Washington and the restrictions on its main ports.
In a message published early on Wednesday, the president said that Tehran loses around 500 million dollars a day and that even the regime's security forces would be having difficulty collecting their salaries.
“Iran is financially collapsing. They want the Strait of Hormuz to open immediately. They're desperate for cash,” Trump wrote, in a statement that combined economic pressure with a tone of political urgency
.
His words came a few hours after he announced the indefinite extension of the ceasefire with Iran, a truce that was about to expire. The decision, he explained, responds to an attempt to open a diplomatic window so that the Iranian government can articulate a unified position in the negotiations, in the midst of what he described as
strong internal divisions. The measure was adopted following efforts by the head of the Pakistani Army, Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who act as mediators in the conflict. However, the detente is partial: the maritime blockade remains in force and U.S. forces remain on alert
