Shameful: Palestinian flag displayed at an opera in London

The Royal Opera House was the scene of a political act that tainted art and ignored the existence of kidnapping victims

The stage of the Royal Opera House in London witnessed not only the dramatic intensity of Verdi's Il Trovatore but also a deliberate political act that stained art with a biased agenda.

At the end of the performance, one of the dancers raised a Palestinian flag, prompting enthusiastic applause from the audience and immediate discomfort from the institution's authorities.

This gesture carries a troubling message. In the current context, with Israel fighting a terrorist organization that has murdered, kidnapped, and raped civilians—a reality many prefer to ignore—the use of the stage of an international artistic institution to take such an obvious side can't be overlooked.

The Royal Opera House rightly stated that the action was "completely inappropriate" and "unauthorized". However, the damage is already done.

In a Europe where Jews face increasing violence, vandalism, and hate speech, raising a Palestinian flag is met with applause, while hoisting an Israeli flag would likely trigger protests, cancellations, and accusations.

The artist in question, Daniel Perry, describes himself as a "queer artist" committed to "resistance and revolution". He ignores the fact that he would be massacred in Palestine, evidently.

Instead of turning opera into a platform for activism, it would be better to let art speak for itself.

Above all, remember that condemning antisemitism is neither optional nor selective.
