Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada have formally announced the recognition of a Palestinian state, led by the Palestinian Authority.
According to the governments of these nations, the measure aims to "empower those seeking peaceful coexistence and the end of Hamas" and to keep alive the possibility of a two-state solution in the Middle East.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese explained that the recognition is part of a coordinated international effort that includes a call for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages still held since October 7, 2023.

In the same vein, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the decision seeks to "keep open the option of peace and a two-state solution".
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney insisted that the measure "is not a reward for terrorism", while reiterating Ottawa's support for Israel's security.
From Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority celebrated the decision as an "irreversible step" toward sovereignty and independence. Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin stated that this international recognition brings the realization of a Palestinian state closer than ever.
Israel, however, considers that these types of international initiatives reward terrorism and weaken security efforts.
Israeli officials have emphasized that a Palestinian state can't exist while the Palestinian Authority continues to refrain from condemning the October 7 massacre and while Hamas holds hostages in Gaza.
Analysts point out that the recognition, far from favoring stable peace, could send the wrong message: that pressure and violence are effective ways to obtain international legitimacy.
For Israel, security and the end of terrorism must be non-negotiable preconditions before any diplomatic progress.
