Amid growing regional tension and with nuclear negotiations virtually stalled, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump focused mainly on Iran and the possibility of resuming military operations against the Islamic Republic.
According to Israeli media, both leaders discussed various scenarios related to the conflict and also talked about Trump’s recent visit to China, where the U.S. president met with President Xi Jinping. Netanyahu, for his part, immediately called for a security meeting with his top ministers and advisors in Jerusalem, reflecting the high level of concern in Israel regarding Iranian movements.
The conversation comes after reports indicate that Israel and the United States have intensified military preparations for possible attacks against Iran, even in the short term. The situation escalated this Sunday when a drone struck near the Barakah nuclear plant in the United Arab Emirates, causing a fire in an external power generator.
Emirati authorities assured that there were no injuries or radiological damage, while the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, condemned the attack and warned about the danger of military activities near nuclear facilities.
Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump
Trump, who has significantly hardened his rhetoric towards Tehran in recent weeks, insisted that he still believes a nuclear deal is possible. However, he issued a new public warning: “The clock is ticking for Iran”, he wrote on social media, threatening severe consequences if the regime does not accept U.S. conditions.
On the Iranian side, responses were equally aggressive. The spokesman for the Iranian armed forces, Abolfazl Shekarchi, warned that any new U.S. attack would provoke “offensive and surprising scenarios”, while senior officials threatened to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz again if Iranian oil infrastructure is affected.
Negotiations also seem stalled due to deep differences. According to Iranian media, Washington demands a drastic limitation of the Iranian nuclear program, including keeping only one nuclear site operational and transferring enriched uranium reserves. Tehran, on the other hand, demands the total lifting of sanctions, the end of the naval blockade, and guarantees to stop all fronts of war in the region, including the conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In Jerusalem, the feeling is growing that diplomatic time is running out. Netanyahu summarized it with a phrase during the weekly cabinet meeting: “Our eyes are open regarding Iran. We are prepared for any scenario”.
