Sheinbaum recognized Palestine as a legitimate state, despite ties with the Hamas group.

Sheinbaum said that the Palestinian State must be fully recognized, just as the State of Israel is

The president,  Claudia Sheinbaum, officially received the credentials of the Palestinian ambassador, Nadya Rasheed while the war in Gaza continues. The credentials were received at the National Palace in Mexico City.

With this action, Mexico would be officially recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state, despite the Palestinian government's ties with the Hamas group.

It is worth noting that on the day of her inauguration, Sheinbaum said that both Israel and Palestine are sovereign.

During a formal event, Ambassador Rasheed expressed her deep gratitude on behalf of her controversial government. She also praised Mexico's lukewarm stanceregarding the war against the terrorist group Hamas in Gaza.

The moment was captured in a photograph showing Sheinbaum alongside Rasheed. On the Palestinian embassy's account on X, an official posted:

"The ambassador expressed her gratitude to the people and government of Palestine for Mexico's defense of human values."

The Embassy of the State of Palestine in Mexico thanks Mexico for its stance in defense of international law, human rights, and justice, while the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its dismay over the violation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which has resulted in more than 400 civilian casualties.

Sheinbaum's stance, of Jewish origin, on the conflict in Gaza

As the first Jewish president of Mexico, Sheinbaum has supported a two-state solution. She has called for the recognition of a Palestinian state despite the presence of radical Islamists in the Gaza Strip.

Additionally, Sheinbaum completely ignored the massacre committed by the terrorist group Hamas against Israel on October 7, a tragedy that sparked the conflict.

"We condemn the aggression suffered by the Palestinian people and firmly believe that Palestine, like Israel, must be recognized in its full sovereignty. This has been Mexico's historical stance and remains unchanged."

declared Sheinbaum last October.

López Obrador had recognized Palestine, but with limited relations

In June 2023, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador officially recognized the State of Palestine, elevating the Palestinian mission in Mexico from a special delegation to a full embassy.

This followed years of limited diplomatic relations, in which Mexico supported the two-state solution. However, it refrained from formally recognizing the status of a Palestinian state.

Mexico's support for Palestine materialized further when, in 2024, the country intervened against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case of alleged genocide.

The lawsuit was filed in line with the legal claim of South Africa and other countries.

Other leftist Latin American countries, such as Brazil, Cuba, and Venezuela, have also expressed their support for the case. However, they have not yet submitted formal requests to join.

The reception of the Palestinian credentials by Sheinbaum coincides with the renewed Israeli military campaign in Gaza. Originated because the terrorist group Hamas has not released the hostages alive.
