Who is Mario Bergara?

Mario Bergara, elected mayor of Montevideo in the departmental elections of May 2025, is a prominent economist, public accountant, and Uruguayan politician from the Frente Amplio, with extensive experience in public management.

Born on May 4, 1965 in Montevideo, Bergara graduated as an economist and accountant from the University of the Republic, and obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1998.

His career includes key roles such as president of the Central Bank of Uruguay (2008-2013 and 2015-2018), Minister of Economy and Finance (2013-2015), and Deputy Minister of the same department (2005-2008), as well as being a Senator since 2020, after losing the internal election for the Presidency.

Bergara, who began his activism in the Communist Youth Union and later aligned with the Frente Amplio after collaborating with Líber Seregni, will assume the mayoralty of Montevideo following the victory of the Frente Amplio, which has governed the capital since 1990.

During the campaign, he highlighted cleanliness and mobility as priorities, aspects that are questioned in previous administrations of the Frente Amplio. His candidacy was supported, strengthening his position in a competitive internal race within the Frente Amplio.

As the elected mayor, Bergara promises to continue the values of the Frente Amplio, governing with dialogue and closeness to the municipalities, and addressing the demands of a city with growing infrastructure and service needs, while denying the use of the Mayor's Office as a springboard for a potential presidential run in 2029.
