Alert in Baja California Sur due to wave of violence and government inaction
United States issues warning after murders, fires, and clashes in tourist areas
A series of violent events between April 22 and 25 raised international alarms. The violence left several dead, vehicles burned, and a strong questioning of the government's ability to guarantee security in one of the country's most important tourist destinations.
On April 22, a second lieutenant of the Secretariat of National Defense was killed in Guerrero Negro while performing civilian activities. That same day, Ulises Omar Cota Montaño, commander of the Narcotics Unit of the State Attorney General's Office, was killed in the Camino Real neighborhood of La Paz.
On April 24, in Cabo San Lucas, three public transport buses were set on fire, paralyzing the service during the high season. The next day, a confrontation in the Arcos del Sol neighborhood between security forces and a criminal cell left four detained and one officer injured.
United States issues warning amid rising violence
Amid this escalation, the United States Consulate in Tijuana issued a security alert for its citizens in La Paz and Los Cabos. The warning recommends avoiding crowds, staying alert, and following instructions from local authorities.
The alert also warns about the possible increase in security forces and potential restrictions on public transportation in the region.
Failure of the 4T's security strategy
This diplomatic warning highlights the fragility of state control in areas that were previously considered safe for international tourism.
The lack of an effective strategy by the federal government to contain organized crime and protect both citizens and visitors calls into question the official narrative of pacification. The 4T has shown a concerning inability to guarantee security in the country's main tourist hubs.
It is urgent that federal and state authorities abandon the triumphalist discourse and act decisively in the face of growing insecurity that threatens not only tourism but also national sovereignty and stability.
