Sheinbaum dismisses IMF warnings despite alarming economic projections

The organization foresees economic contraction and an increase in debt, but the leader insists on her ideological model

In a public act that bordered on disdain toward international organizations, Claudia Sheinbaum downplayed the projections of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which anticipate a 0.3% GDP contraction in 2025 and an increase in public debt to 60.7% of GDP.

During her speech, Sheinbaum stated that the IMF "hasn't understood that the Fourth Transformation has arrived in Mexico," hinting at an ideological stance over technical analysis. She justified her rejection with repeated official arguments: eradicating corruption and returning resources "to the people."

Ideological defense over data

The president insisted that her administration follows principles like "for the good of all, the poor first", stating that the budget is allocated to social programs, health, education, and housing.

However, the abandonment of the health system, job losses, and increasing violence contradict her speech. These realities contrast with the government's optimistic narrative, which seems disconnected from the facts.

Sheinbaum asserted that her economic model "makes the economy flourish from below," in opposition to the traditional approach that favors the elites. Nonetheless, current macroeconomic indicators question the effectiveness of this approach.

Adverse context and lack of direction

The IMF attributes its projections to various factors, including the tariff policies of the United States, which have affected consumption and investment in Mexico.

Financial analysts warn of a possible technical recession, driven by the decline in private investment and uncertainty stemming from erratic political decisions.

Additionally, the pending election in the Supreme Court has stalled new investments, increasing the perception of risk among national and foreign investors.

Persistence in economic error

It's not the first time the officialdom dismisses technical warnings. Despite Andrés Manuel López Obrador promising a 6% growth during his term, his administration was the one with the lowest economic growth in decades.

Today, Sheinbaum seems to follow the same path, clinging to an ideological vision without corrections or self-criticism. The lack of concrete results raises serious doubts about the sustainability of her model.

Despite the adverse scenario, the president reiterated her defense of the 4T model, based on political clientelism and waste of public funds. But the growing internal and external pressure shows that speeches don't replace results.
