Mexico issued a statement due to the increase in measles cases.
Increase in measles cases raises health alarms in the country
The Health Secretariat issued an epidemiological alert due to the increase in measles cases in the country.
By the tenth epidemiological week of 2025, 416 probable cases and 22 confirmed cases were reported, mainly in Chihuahua and Oaxaca.

Geographical distribution and affected groups
Of the 22 confirmed cases, 18 were recorded in Chihuahua and 4 in Oaxaca. The majority of the affected are children aged 5 to 9, with 11 cases in this age group.
Other affected groups include people aged 10 to 14 (4 cases), 25 to 44 (4 cases), 15 to 19 (2 cases), and 1 to 4 (1 case).

International situation and risk of importation
Globally, 32,488 suspected cases and 16,144 confirmed cases of measles were reported, with significant outbreaks in countries like Yemen, Pakistan, and India.
In the United States, Texas recorded nearly 200 cases by March 8, 2025, being the most affected state.
Other states with cases include New Mexico, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington.
This situation increases the risk of imported cases in Mexico due to the high population movement between both countries.
Importance of vaccination and preventive measures
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through airborne droplets or direct contact with secretions from infected individuals.
It can cause severe complications, such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death, especially in children under 5 and older adults.
Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent measles. In Mexico, the vaccination schedule includes the administration of the MMR vaccine. Since this vaccine protects against measles, rubella, and mumps, in two doses: the first at one year of age and the second at six years.
Health authorities urge the population to verify their vaccination schedules and visit health units to receive the corresponding doses.
Additionally, it is recommended to maintain hygiene measures, such as frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
Response of authorities and epidemiological surveillance
The Health Secretariat, through the National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance (CONAVE), reinforced epidemiological surveillance throughout the country.
Epidemiological alerts have been issued to alert health units about the timely detection and reporting of suspected measles cases.
Additionally, vaccination actions have been implemented in affected communities and close national coordination is maintained. As well as with the health authorities of the United States to monitor the situation at the border.
Recommendations to the population
- Given the increase in measles cases, the population is advised to:
- Verify and complete the vaccination schedules of all family members.
- Visit health units if symptoms such as fever, rash, cough, conjunctivitis, or runny nose appear.
- Avoid crowded places if symptoms compatible with measles are present.
- Maintain hygiene measures, such as frequent handwashing and the use of disposable tissues.
The collaboration of the population is essential to control the spread of measles in the country and protect everyone's health.
