They Would Have Fired the Secretary of the National Anti-corruption System... for Corruption!
The scandal highlights the lack of control and credibility in the fight against corruption under Morena's government.
The fight against corruption in Mexico has suffered a severe blow following the dismissal of the technical secretary of the National Anti-Corruption System (SNA). The removal of the official was due to alleged financial irregularities. Ironically, the institution responsible for eradicating corruption now faces its own scandal, exposing the structural failures of the current government in its fight against this issue.
The now former official, Roberto Moreno Herrera, was responsible for ensuring transparency and accountability.
Misuse of resources and influence peddling
Despite his role, he allegedly engaged in the misuse of public resources and influence peddling. These accusations have come to light thanks to information obtained from sources close to the investigation.
His dismissal not only raises doubts about the functioning of the SNA but also reinforces criticisms about the lack of effectiveness of Morena's government in combating corruption.
Corruption remains a problem in AMLO's government
Since the beginning of his administration, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised to eradicate corruption and assured that his government would be the most honest in the history of Mexico. However, this case adds to a long list of scandals that have tarnished his administration. This demonstrates that the promises of the so-called "fourth transformation" have remained mere rhetoric.
This is not the first case that calls into question the supposed anti-corruption strategy of the current government. Scandals such as Segalmex, the opaque contracts in Dos Bocas, and the allegations against high-level officials reflect a worrying pattern. While the official discourse insists that "there is no more corruption", reality shows otherwise, even though the president claims to have "other data."
A weakened anti-corruption system
The dismissal of the SNA secretary is a reflection of how key institutions to combat corruption have been co-opted or weakened. The lack of autonomy and governmental inefficiency have turned the fight against corruption into mere rhetoric without concrete actions.
Without a true strategy to clean up power structures, Mexico will continue to face cases like this, where impunity and distrust in institutions continue to rise.
What is next for the National Anti-Corruption System?
If decisive measures are not taken, the SNA risks becoming a mere facade, without real capacity for action. Meanwhile, citizens continue to await an effective fight against corruption.
