The legislature raises its salary to 131,700 pesos (290,360 pounds)—only 2,590 pesos (5,710 pounds) behind the presidential pay
Amid the tariff war between Mexico, Canada, and the United States, the legislators of the Senate of the Republic did their "thing." They gave themselves a "little raise" to their salary, to almost match that of the president Claudia Sheinbaum.
This was announced by the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on February 28. It was published in the senators' remuneration manual, where the update of their salary appears.

With the modification, the legislators of the Upper House now have a monthly salary of 131,700 pesos, which is 2,590 pesos less than President Claudia Sheinbaum, who receives a salary of 134,290 pesos.
Although the legislators' salary adjustment is made year by year, they do not detail the reasons for the increase.
The remuneration manual indicates that the movements are made in accordance with the provisions established in the Federal Budget and Fiscal Responsibility Law. More precisely in the Federal Expenditure Budget Decree

The remuneration received by the public servants of the Senate of the Republic is governed by the following principles:
- To be adequate and non-waivable for the performance of functions, jobs, positions, or commissions
- Proportional to their responsibilities; with labor equality and non-discrimination;
- As well as determined for each fiscal year," the document details.
In 2024, the senators' monthly salary had been set at 126,800 pesos, 5 percent more than in 2023, when they received 119,700 pesos.
What benefits does a senator have and how many days is their year-end bonus?
In addition to the "big salary," the Remuneration Manual for senior public servants and their equivalents includes the following benefits:
- Grocery assistance in cash or vouchers
- Support for vehicle use
- Vacation bonus equivalent to 15 days of base salary
- Five-year bonus
- Year-end bonus or gratuity, with 40 days of base salary, and, if applicable, the guaranteed compensation
- Death benefits
- Vacations

Social media users criticized the salary increase for the Senators because "they don't go to the senate for anything." The senators seem to live off politics and not live for politics, which is harmful to a healthy democracy.
It is worth noting that politicians' salaries have been increasing year by year since Morena has governed with a majority.
