Tim Golden responds to Sheinbaum following report on narcopolitics and US sanctions
The journalist defends his investigation as tension grows between Mexico and Washington
Tim Golden, a journalist who has won two Pulitzer Prizes and a contributor to ProPublica, replied to the criticisms from President Claudia Sheinbaum. This followed the publication of his report pointing to possible U.S. sanctions against Mexican politicians for alleged ties to drug trafficking.
In an interview with Carlos Loret de Mola for "Así las Cosas," Golden was emphatic: "I'm not surprised by the president's response. I've written about this topic for many years in Mexico. People who know my work have their own judgment, and I'm very comfortable with the respect for my work".
"They're rumors," says Sheinbaum
President Sheinbaum dismissed the report, calling it "rumors without concrete evidence". According to her, there aren't enough elements to support the accusations.
Golden clarified that his investigation is based on interviews with active and retired officials, as well as the analysis of official documents. Although he knows the names of the alleged individuals involved, he decided not to reveal them publicly.
However, he mentioned a specific case: the governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar, whom the U.S. government allegedly revoked the visa.
The journalist also highlighted that security decisions about Mexico don't come only from the FBI or the DEA, but also from agencies like the CIA and the Department of Defense, which reinforces the seriousness of the matter.
Tension with the Mexican government grows
The report has caused controversy in Mexico, especially due to its implications for bilateral relations with the United States and the public perception of Morena officials.
Sheinbaum reiterated that the FGR hasn't received official information from the U.S. about sanctions or ongoing investigations. However, the refusal to acknowledge these reports seems more like a political strategy than an institutional response.
The exchange between Golden and the Mexican government reflects the growing tensions with international journalism. It also exposes the lack of transparency and accountability in the most sensitive issues: security and the fight against drug trafficking.
