The destruction of Uruguayan education: imposition of the woke agenda from above

Ode to mediocrity

With the recent reinstatement of the Comprehensive Sexual Education Commission (ESI), which universalizes throughout the national educational system the constructivist and relativist epistemological approach to sexuality, the intentions of the Director of Primary Education to directly destroy the educational structure are added.

In an unprecedented delusion, Gabriela Salsamendi intends to eliminate school grades and the honorable flag bearer system for perpetuating structural inequalities. Worse still: she described the merit-based system as "undemocratic," devaluing its historical role in the republican school as a driver of individual progress.

With this kind of revolutionary crusade in the name of inclusion and diversity, considering themselves—in the words of Sir Roger Scruton—the champions of the new order that will correct the old injustices inflicted on the oppressed, the Uruguayan left tramples on patriotism in schools, the culture of effort, and the natural processes of learning.

The destruction of the republican school

The foundations of the current proposal by the Director of Primary Education can be found in her Master's thesis in Education, Society, and Politics (FLACSO).

Salsamendi's study focuses on the effect of relative age (RAE) as a factor that generates inequalities in school performance, derived from the organization of grades by chronological age.

She argues that the homogenizing model of single-grade classrooms harms the youngest students of each generation, increasing grade repetition and affecting their grades, which reinforces the need for a more inclusive and flexible education.

Toward an inclusive and diverse school

Salsamendi proposes making school structures more flexible with multigrade models to adapt the school to children's diversity, instead of forcing children to fit into a rigid and exclusionary system.

Her research states that the effect of relative age (RAE) biases school performance (grades and promotions), affecting the perception of maturity and generating inequalities.

Under this logic, "merit," the basis of the flag bearer system, is not equitable, resulting in injustice and being undemocratic by excluding the youngest, who start at a disadvantage due to their date of birth.

FLACSO Uruguay: the national tentacle of the Latin American left

To understand this destructive initiative, it is enough to keep in mind that Gabriela Salsamendi is the academic coordinator of one of the four master's programs offered by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), the academic arm of the Latin American left.

Founded in 1957 by direct initiative of UNESCO, FLACSO has established itself as the leading platform for the dissemination of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in the region.

In 2006, under the first government of Tabaré Vázquez, with Law No. 17,976, Uruguay adhered to the Agreement on FLACSO. Subsequently, during José Mujica's administration in 2013, with Law No. 19,108, the agreement for a headquarters in the Republic was approved.

Deconstruction: the banner of woke resentment

Wokeism and its desire to demolish the structures, institutions, customs, and traditions that have shaped the shared system of norms and values of our societies do not arise spontaneously, but are the result of an intellectual and academic process with deep philosophical roots.

The notion of deconstruction, introduced by Heidegger in the first half of the twentieth century, was recycled by Jacques Derrida, becoming the quintessential political weapon at the service of the new left, with the aim of subverting the foundations of Western tradition.

Social sciences at the service of woke ideology

In this process, disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies articulate and legitimize the political deconstruction of wokeism, questioning institutions and essential social categories.

FLACSO is a concrete example of this institutionalized logic: its academic offerings revolve around gender, climate change, and everything related to the United Nations rights agenda.

It is the academic arm of wokeism in Latin America and the Caribbean, responsible for presenting the West as inherently oppressive, racist, and sexist.

Its "prestigious" research directly influences public policies in the eighteen member states, including Uruguay.

Destruction of merit and national values in schools

Nothing good can come from FLACSO, since it promotes a vision that undermines the values that made the West great. In this sense, the policies that Gabriela Salsamendi, Director of Primary Education and academic coordinator of FLACSO, intends to impose on the Uruguayan educational system are not surprising.

Her intention reflects the woke illusion that everyone must perform and stand out equally, ignoring the natural diversity of abilities and capacities of each student.

Education that doesn't reward merit ultimately weakens the character, autonomy, and preparation of citizens to face the challenges of life and society.

The flag bearer system in Uruguay is not just a school tradition: it fulfills a symbolic role of citizenship and belonging to the Nation. Carrying the flag at school has historically been a recognition of merit, responsibility, and commitment to patriotic values.

It is not a simple pedagogical adjustment: it is part of a cultural egalitarian project that strips future generations of the patriotic values that sustain national identity, hierarchies, and the culture of effort.
