Radio M24, whose owner is a frontwoman for the MPP, the majority sector of the Frente Amplio, has closed its current programming and dismissed all of its approximately 42 "workers" as a result of a change in ownership.
Several were not actual employees in a dependent relationship, but rather had sole proprietorships, and others were workers but were off the books.
The station, historically linked to the Movimiento de Participación Popular, was sold to an Argentine business group, which also owns the newspaper El Observador in Uruguay.
Economic reasons
The radio's management argued that the sale was due to the station always having operated with an economic deficit, and they decided not to continue assuming those losses.
This is not very credible because the radio's management refuses to show the accounting statements.

"MPP left us out on the street"
The change in ownership resulted in the dismissal of all staff, including 29 dependent employees and another 13 who had sole proprietorships.
Gonzalo Cammarota from the program "Justicia infinita" expressed his outrage and sadness at the way the situation was handled, criticizing the "coldness and cruelty" and the lack of transparent communication from the owners, especially regarding the main leaders of the MPP.
Fernando Tetes also pointed to the MPP leadership as responsible for the mass layoffs, and other radio hosts spoke of "betrayal and a stab in the back to the radio's workers."
