The Communist Party that is running in the elections with list 1001 is being illegally financed according to Sunca union members who belong to that party.
Complex crimes prosecutor Gilberto Rodríguez is investigating the diversion of at least $1,200,000 from Sunca, the construction workers' union that was led for many years by Óscar Andrade, the party's current senator, and also by Daniel Diverio, communist representative for Canelones.
Prosecutor Rodríguez himself said last year that no line of investigation is being ruled out and that both Andrade and Liberio could be called to testify before the prosecutor's office.
Current situation
As of January 2026, the accusations about the illegal financing of the Communist Party of Uruguay (PCU) are linked to an ongoing prosecutorial investigation into the diversion of funds from the Social Housing Fund for Construction Workers (Fosvoc), a "solidarity" tool of Sunca.
The Economic Crimes Prosecutor's Office and the National Secretariat for the Fight against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (Senaclaft) are investigating a massive fraud estimated at more than 1,200,000 dollars.
At least five people have already been criminally convicted in this case. They are former Sunca union members who testified before the courts about the massive fraud.
They indicated that part of the diverted money was used to finance PCU electoral campaigns, including the Frente Amplio primaries and the campaign for the "Yes" to the social security reform.
List 1001 financed the campaign for the June 2024 primary elections and the national elections in October of that year, as well as the departmental and municipal elections in May 2025.
