The government of leftist Yamandú Orsi took office on March 1, 2025. According to official data from Uruguay's Ministry of the Interior and updated journalistic reports, the homicide rate has increased compared to 2024, when a total of 382 cases were recorded.
These are extremely high figures, doubling the global average (around 5-6 per 100,000 inhabitants) and surpassing neighboring countries such as Argentina (4.4) or Chile (4.5).
The total for 2025 up to October 19 is about 275 homicides, with a rate of about 10.5 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Enormously high figures for a country with a population of 3,500,000 inhabitants.
Ministry of the Interior provides no answers
Carlos Negro, Minister of the Interior, said as soon as he took office that "the war against drug trafficking is lost," a disastrous signal that was taken advantage of by criminals.
The head of the National Police gives up before fighting crime.

Since taking office, Negro has made unfortunate statements and has traveled abroad several times, instead of being in Uruguay solving security problems.
