The recent photo of Lionel Messi with US President Donald Trump generated repercussions in sports fields and, mainly, politicians.

One of those who spoke out on the matter was the impressive former president Alberto Fernández, who I don't hesitate to compare him to Diego Maradona.

In radio statements, the former president argued that the context of the new generations is different from that of other times. “I have the impression that not everyone has the level of politicization that some of us have. Suddenly we asked soccer players from a generation where depoliticization is very evident to have attitudes like those of Maradona

,” he said.

The former head of state also highlighted the figure of the former captain of the Argentine National Team and his influence beyond football.

“In Argentine history and in the world, there has not been a football player, a character of the quality of Maradona,” he said, while defining himself as a "fervent Maradonist”.

In this regard, he pointed out that Messi's attitudes are often compared to those of the world champion in 1986, although he believes that these are very different personal trajectories. “We tend to see which one is better, we demand from Messi things that Maradona did and that he did because he was an exceptional being,”

he said.

Fernández also highlighted the differences in the journey of both players off the field. “Maradona didn't have Messi's technique, but he had something innate and wonderful and he had a commitment to his people that maybe someone who went to live in Spain at the age of 12 doesn't have,”

he said.

Although he clarified that this is not a criticism of Messi, it is clear that Fernández supports Maradona for very clear reasons other than purely sporting ones: he agreed with his nefarious political ideology.
