The governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, received former macrista leaders Emilio Monzón and Nicolás Massot at the headquarters of the Buenos Aires government, both with relevant backgrounds during the administration of Cambiemos.
The meeting is also part of the strategy that Kicillof has been outlining to broaden his base of political support. In that sense, he had already publicly expressed the need to transcend the limits of traditional Peronism
. Axel Kicillof.
“This movement was born out of Peronism, but we are clear that it is not enough only with Peronism or with the province of Buenos Aires,” he said in December, during an event in Ensenada that served as a launching platform for the Right to the Future Movement (MDF), with a national projection for the
2027 electoral scene.
Monzón and Massot, both Buenos Aires leaders, held key positions in Congress during the period 2015-2019. The first was president of the Chamber of Deputies, while the second served as head of the PRO block
.
In addition, Monzón played a central role in the political construction of the Cambiemos coalition, articulating agreements with the Radical Civic Union and the Civic Coalition, although he later distanced himself from Macri.
From the governor's environment, they explained the nature of the meeting: “They talked, as they usually do, about the social, political and economic situation. It's part of talking and listening to everyone.”
Axel Kicillof and Cristina Kirchner.
The meeting joins other recent movements within the political framework, such as Miguel Pichetto's visit to the corrupt and convicted Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in the department where the
former president is serving house arrest.
In this context, both Kicillof and Kirchner, despite maintaining a distant relationship, agree to show signs of openness to leaders who moved away from Peronism, especially during the years of Kirchnerism. Pichetto, for example, was a candidate for vice-president in the formula led by Macri
in 2019.
From the environment of the former leaders of Macrismo, they also evaluated the current scenario: “We don't know what can arise. For now, there is not much room for progress, but for building trust. Axel was seen with breadth and desire to listen
”.
Within this framework, some leaders are proposing the possibility of moving towards a broad front to compete electorally against La Libertad Avanza, President Milei's party.
