A republican project that legally maintained the number of judges in the high court was rejected by the left opposition

The bill pushed by Republicans to set the number of justices on the Supreme Court of the United States failed this Wednesday, after almost the entirety of the Democratic representatives voted against it in the House of Representatives.

The initiative, which being a constitutional amendment required a two-thirds majority in the lower house and not a simple majority vote, was rejected by opposition lawmakers. From the Trump camp, it was warned that this rejection responds to the Democratic intention to carry out a judicial coup and expand the number of justices on the highest court - currently with a conservative majority - in case they win the presidency in 2028.

Setting the number of justices at nine requires a constitutional amendment, but modifying or adding seats on the highest court only requires the approval of an ordinary law. Therefore, any intervention on the Court that the opposition attempts to carry out will be blocked by Donald Trump's veto power, but this scenario could change when the Republican president officially concludes his second term in January 2029.

In any case, the Speaker of the House, Republican Mike Johnson, expected the opposition to reject the bill and submitted it for a vote so that voters could see the true face of the left. Johnson pointed out that, in addition to seeking to defund the police, abolish borders, and eliminate prisons, the Democrats have a firm intention to expand the composition of the highest court.

The new Congress will take office in January 2027, and President Trump will categorically veto any law that threatens judicial stability and integrity. Overriding an executive veto requires a two-thirds vote in both chambers, a majority that Democrats are far from achieving even if they win the November elections.
