Argentine tennis will have a change of command in the ATP ranking starting next Monday. Tomás Etcheverry will become the country's new number one after achieving the best position of his career, while Francisco Cerúndolo will lose the leadership he held since the

beginning of 2025.

The player from La Plata will rise to 26th place in the world ranking after his performance at the Masters 1000 in Madrid, where he reached the round of 16 before falling to Frenchman Arthur Fils 6-3 and 6-4. Although he could not advance further in the tournament, the accumulated points were enough to overcome his compatriot and become the best placed national racket on the

circuit.

This achievement comes at the height of his career. This year, the 26-year-old from La Plata won his first ATP title after winning the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, where he defeated Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in the final. In addition, he became the Argentine with the most victories against brick dust in 2026, with 15

wins.

The change in the national top was also marked by the defeat of Cerúndolo, who failed to defend the points obtained by reaching the semifinal in the last edition of the tournament in the Spanish capital. The Buenos Aires player fell in the eighth round against the Belgian Alexander Blockx 7-6 (8) and 6-2, a result that will push him back

to 27th place in the ranking.

That match left bitter feelings for Cerúndolo, who wasted four set points in the first set and felt the emotional impact after losing the tie break to the young Belgian, breaking his racket in the fight.

In this way, Cerúndolo will close a cycle of more than one year as the best Argentine in the ATP ranking, a condition he achieved on January 27, 2025 after beating Sebastián Báez after the Australian

Open.

The European tour on brick dust will now continue with the Masters 1000 in Rome and then Roland Garros, where both will seek to continue climbing positions and consolidate themselves among the main names on the circuit.
