The definition of the venue for the next Final between Argentina and Spain entered a key stage. The unpresentable president of the Argentine Football Association, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, will hold a meeting with Alejandro Domínguez, head of CONMEBOL, to analyze possible scenarios and advance a common position on where the match should be played
.
The meeting was officially announced by the official AFA account on X: “Tonight President Claudio Tapía will meet with the President of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, to discuss the Final between Argentina and Spain”.
Domínguez will meet with Tapia
It is expected that three main axes will be addressed during the meeting: the definition of the venue and a tentative date for the party, aspects related to logistics, security and ticket distribution, and commercial agreements and television rights for the region and the international market
.
The match between the champions of the Copa América and the European Championship is scheduled for March 27, although the scenario is not yet confirmed. Initially, Qatar had been considered, but the option was practically ruled out due to the war in the Middle East, which forced federations to reconsider alternatives
.
In this context, UEFA and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) promote the possibility of the match being played at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. The AFA, on the other hand, wants the match to be played in South America or, at least, in a neutral venue
. From Spain they proposed the Santiago Bernabéu as the venue
Tapia himself made his position clear when referring to the negotiation. “We are going to get to work because Spain wants it to be played in Spain and I want it to be played in Monumental,” said the leader after coming out of testifying before the courts in the case for allegedly undue withholding of tax and social security contributions
.
Monumental may not be an option
.
Although River Stadium appears to be one of the most attractive alternatives to the AFA, its availability represents a problem. Recitals by the band AC/DC are scheduled for Friday, March 27, so it would force the game to be postponed to the June FIFA window if Buenos Aires is finally chosen as the
venue. The Monumental has recitals scheduled for the original date of the Final
While candidates are being debated, other options on the European continent that the parent company of Argentine football welcomes are Lisbon and Rome
