The territorial integrity of Spain is currently facing one of its most critical moments due to the disastrous management of the socialist government of Pedro Sánchez, whose weakness has encouraged an unprecedented invasion in northern Africa. However, the firmness in the defense of Ceuta and Melilla —Spanish cities since 1415 and 1497, respectively— was a constant during the Transition.
In January 1978, during a visit to Madrid with King Juan Carlos I as a witness, the Moroccan monarch Hasan II attempted to intimidate the newly elected president Adolfo Suárez.
In a meeting marked by tension, the Alaouite monarch, emboldened by the success of the Green March on Western Sahara in 1975, made a direct affront to national security: "You know that Ceuta and Melilla have no defense against a surprise invasion from Morocco".
In the face of this frontal attack on sovereignty, Adolfo Suárez did not back down and responded with a firmness that today seems forgotten in the halls of La Moncloa: "You know that if that were to happen, we could bomb Rabat, or Casablanca, in just 48 hours".
With this blunt warning, Suárez reminded that "defending Spanish territory is established in our Defense plans", abruptly halting the expansionist desires of a Morocco that sought to take advantage of the supposed political weakness of Spain.
