The United States government confirmed that an investigation is being carried out on the current president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, for his alleged relationship with international drug trafficking and the possible receipt of illicit money from narco-terrorist organizations.

The investigations are being conducted primarily by federal prosecutors in Manhattan and Brooklyn, with support from the DEA and national security agencies. As it transpired, the investigation is at an early stage and is being carried out under strict confidentiality, with the majority of those involved maintaining

anonymity.

According to sources close to the case, possible links and even meetings between Petro and drug trafficking leaders are being analyzed. The objective would be to determine if there was any type of cooperation or irregular funding during the 2022 Colombian election campaign, in which it is suspected that sectors linked to drug trafficking would have made

significant economic contributions.

In this context, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has expressed harsh criticism of the Colombian administration, pointing out that the country continues to be the largest producer of cocaine in the world and questioning the strategy of the Petro government in dealing with this problem.

Washington's foreign policy in recent months has placed a strong emphasis on the fight against drug trafficking, promoting coordinated actions in

the region.

In addition, the White House has sought to strengthen alliances with different Latin American countries to confront the advance of organized crime, finding coincidences in governments such as those of Argentina, El Salvador and Ecuador.

For his part, Gustavo Petro categorically denied any link to illegal activities and assured that during his administration, progress has been made in reducing coca crops. However, parallel investigations in Colombia have generated controversy, after his son recognized the existence of irregular money in the presidential campaign, which increased suspicion about the

president's environment.

The relationship between Petro and Trump has experienced moments of marked tension in recent months, although recent diplomatic contacts suggest an attempt at recomposition. Despite this, the development of these investigations could add a new factor of uncertainty to the bilateral link and to the Colombian political scene.
