The head of the Buenos Aires government, Jorge Macri, met this Monday in Washington D.C. with Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, as part of an agenda focused on security, economic growth, investments, and strengthening the relationship between Argentina and the United States.

During the meeting, Macri was accompanied by the Secretary General and of International Relations of the City, Fulvio Pompeo; the Chief of Staff of Buenos Aires, Gabriel Sánchez Zinny; and national deputy Cristian Ritondo. The meeting took place as Washington deepens its focus on the main challenges in the region, including security, the fight against drug trafficking, the defense of sovereignty, and economic growth.

Jorge Macri supported Argentina's change of course

After the meeting with Landau, Jorge Macri emphasized the importance of sustaining the transformation process that Argentina is undergoing and raised the need to provide certainty and predictability to attract investments.

“Very important meeting with Christopher Landau, Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, along with Cristian Ritondo, Gabriel Sánchez Zinny, and Fulvio Pompeo. We talked about the change of course that Argentina has been undertaking and the need to sustain it: to provide certainty, predictability, and guarantees that we will not return to the past,” said the head of government.

Macri also highlighted the PRO's support for the reform process and noted that a closer relationship with the United States can help generate investments, jobs, and new opportunities for Argentina.

“From the PRO, we promote and support that change. We believe that deepening a mature and solid relationship with the United States is part of the right path to attract investments, generate jobs, and give our country the opportunities it deserves,” he added.

Security, law, and order: another focus of the meeting

Security also occupied a central place on the agenda. In this regard, Jorge Macri focused on the importance of law and order as necessary conditions to guarantee freedom and economic development.

The head of government explained that during the meeting, the management of the City of Buenos Aires was also discussed, along with the need to consolidate a scenario with clear rules, security, and predictability.

“We also talked about the management in the City, about the importance of law and order as an indispensable condition for living in freedom: with security, clear rules, and real opportunities to progress,” he stated.

This proposal is part of a regional agenda in which the United States has been placing special emphasis on the fight against drug trafficking, security, and institutional strengthening, in addition to the necessary conditions to promote investments and growth.

Buenos Aires seeks to deepen its relationship with the United States

In this context, the City of Buenos Aires seeks to consolidate its own link with the United States, taking advantage of its status as the Argentine capital and one of the main political, economic, and financial centers of the country.

The Buenos Aires administration maintains that greater cooperation can open opportunities in terms of investments, business, security, and economic development.

During his visit to Washington D.C., Jorge Macri also plans a meeting with business leaders and representatives from the financial sector along with Citi Bank, where the transformations taking place in Buenos Aires, investment and business opportunities, and the Argentine economic scenario will be analyzed.

The international agenda of the head of government also includes a meeting with Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington D.C., to address the relationship between both capitals and explore opportunities for exchange and cooperation.

An agenda aligned with the new international scenario

The meeting with Christopher Landau comes at a time when the relationship between Argentina and the United States occupies a strategic place for the economic and political future of the region.

From Buenos Aires, Macri seeks to position the City as a relevant actor within that relationship and promote an agenda based on security, respect for property, rule of law, predictability, and investments.

The message from the head of government was aligned with the defense of a change of course for Argentina and the need to avoid a return to past policies.

“To provide certainty, predictability, and guarantees that we will not return to the past” was one of the main concepts raised by Macri after his meeting with the U.S. official.

With his agenda in Washington, Jorge Macri seeks to strengthen the institutional and economic ties of Buenos Aires with the United States, while promoting greater integration of the City with international investment and cooperation circuits.
