The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, ordered to guarantee the full and immediate access of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, after the incident in which he was prevented from celebrating Palm Sunday mass. The decision came after strong international repercussion and questioning over security measures in one of the holiest sites in Christianity.
The episode occurred in the context of a context of maximum tension in Jerusalem, where the Israeli authorities had decided to limit access to holy places for security reasons. As Netanyahu himself explained, the measure was linked to recent ballistic missile attacks launched by Iran against sensitive areas of the city, including points near the Holy Sepulcher
. The Holy Sepulchre of Jesus.
According to the official version, projectile fragments hit a few meters from the temple, prompting security forces to request the temporary suspension of religious activities in the Old City. In this context, Cardinal Pizzaballa was asked to refrain from celebrating mass, a decision that was later reversed directly by the
head of government.
Netanyahu clarified that the restriction responded exclusively to a concern for the safety of faithful and religious leaders, in a scenario where places of worship present operational difficulties for rapid evacuation in the face of possible attacks. However, after learning about the specific case of the Latin Patriarch, he ordered to allow the normal development of his
religious activity.
The incident generated reactions in different sectors of the international community. The Latin Patriarchate described the initial measure as disproportionate and warned of the precedent that would entail preventing celebrations on key dates such as Holy Week. In turn, political leaders - Emmanuel Macrón and Georgia Meloni among them - and religious leaders from various countries expressed concern about possible restrictions on
freedom of worship. “I express my full support to the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and to the Christians of the Holy Land, who were prevented from celebrating Palm Sunday Mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. I condemn the decision of the Israeli police, which adds to a worrying series of violations of the status of holy sites in Jerusalem. Freedom of worship in Jerusalem must be guaranteed for all religions.”
In parallel, Pizzaballa himself adopted a moderate stance, recognizing the risky context in Jerusalem but insisting on the need to preserve religious traditions, especially at times of
high significance for the faithful.
The final decision of the Israeli Government now seeks to balance security conditions with respect for religious practice, in a historic city where the three great monotheistic religions live together. The episode reflects the fragility of the balance in Jerusalem, marked by growing geopolitical tensions under the military escalation with the Iranian regime
