More than two centuries after its creation, the “General San Martín” Grenadier Horse Regiment celebrated its 214th anniversary this Monday with an event led by President Javier Milei. The ceremony once again highlighted the historic role of the force founded to defend the independence of the Rio de la Plata and the president's enhancement of the Armed Forces.
The historic formation was created on March 16, 1812 by the then Lieutenant Colonel José de San Martín with the objective of organizing an elite military unit capable of confronting realistic forces in the process of emancipation. Since 1903, the Grenadiers have served as Presidential Escort, an institutional responsibility that they maintain to this day. His presence accompanies the official acts of the head of state and represents one of the most recognized symbols of the historical continuity between the exploits of independence and modern republican institutionality
