Andy Burnham defended London's position on the archipelago and assured that he will respond to any "threat" or "challenge"
From the Argentine position, moreover, the principle of self-determination invoked by London is not applicable to the Falklands case. Argentina argues that the current population of the archipelago derives from the process initiated after the British occupation of 1833 and the expulsion of Argentine authorities, and therefore does not recognize its inhabitants as holders of a right capable of unilaterally resolving the sovereignty dispute.
Burnham's statements come as President Javier Milei deepens the Argentine diplomatic claim over the archipelago. In a recent interview with French television, the president stated that “the Falklands are Argentine due to history and law” and reiterated that the government's objective is to recover full exercise of sovereignty through diplomatic means.
Milei also rejected the use of self-determination as an argument to resolve the dispute and recalled that, from the Argentine perspective, the original population was displaced after the British occupation and subsequently replaced. “We are working on a state policy regarding the Falklands and we seek to recover them through diplomatic means”, the President assured.
This position is supported by the National Constitution, which reaffirms Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands and establishes that their recovery and full exercise of sovereignty constitute a permanent and inalienable objective of the Argentine people.
Thus, while Burnham used the General Assembly to reaffirm the British position on the archipelago, the Argentine government maintains its strategy of increasing diplomatic pressure and asserting before the international community that the controversy must be resolved through bilateral negotiations.
The British Prime Minister Andy Burnham once again defended the British occupation of the Falkland Islands before the United Nations General Assembly and stated that the United Kingdom will remain “firm” in the face of any questioning regarding the archipelago.
During his speech, Burnham linked the issue of the archipelago to his defense of the so-called “rule of law” and placed the Argentine claim within the challenges that, according to London, it faces regarding its overseas territories.
“We will stand firm against any threat and challenge to the rule of law, not only from Russia but also from others, even when they threaten the right of British territories to remain British, such as the Falkland Islands”, asserted the English Prime Minister.
The British assertion comes despite the fact that the United Nations has recognized for decades the existence of a sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands, and has urged both countries to resume negotiations to reach a peaceful and definitive solution.
