Ubisoft has announced that the future of Far Cry will be marked by a greater focus on multiplayer. According to Yves Guillemot, the company's CEO, the goal is to adapt the franchise to the growing demand for online experiences that encourage user interaction and extend playtime.
New creative direction at Ubisoft Montreal
The leadership of the franchise has moved to Ubisoft Montreal, a studio considered the historical core of Far Cry. As part of this process, Sandra Warren was appointed vice president and executive producer, while Drew Holmes, lead writer of Far Cry 5, assumed the role of intellectual property director in 2023.

These changes aim to strengthen the creative vision of the franchise and ensure consistency in the transition toward a more robust multiplayer model, with proposals that better connect with the global community.
Far Cry 7 and a standalone multiplayer project
Ubisoft is working on two parallel projects: Far Cry 7, developed with the Snowdrop engine, and a standalone extraction-focused title set in Alaska. The latter will combine survival, encounters with wildlife, and player competition for resources.

The strategy responds to the global trend of transforming renowned franchises into games as a service, with periodic updates, events, and content that sustain user interest over the long term.
The community divided over the new approach
Although Far Cry 6 offered a cooperative mode, it lacked competitive online options, something Ubisoft seeks to address in this new phase. The shift toward persistent experiences promises tournaments, shared progression systems, and global events, which could attract new audiences and strengthen the loyalty of the most active fans.
However, part of the community fears that the focus on multiplayer will reduce space for single-player narrative experiences that have historically characterized the franchise. The final response will depend on how Ubisoft manages to balance innovation and tradition in its upcoming releases.
