The trip confirms the intention of Chile's president-elect to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Buenos Aires

After his overwhelming victory in the presidential runoff in Chile, President-elect José Antonio Kast will make a visit to Argentina, where he will meet with Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada this Tuesday.

The trip confirms the new leader's intention to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Buenos Aires from the very beginning of his administration, in one of the main political signals left by the election in the neighboring country.

According to official sources, Kast will arrive in the country after meeting with the current Chilean president, the communist Gabriel Boric, as part of the institutional transition process. After that meeting, he will embark on his first trip abroad as president-elect, heading to Argentina.

The meeting with Milei is scheduled for midday and takes place in a context of explicit strong ideological affinity between both leaders. Although during the electoral campaign the Argentine president avoided formally endorsing the Chilean candidate, he expressed personal praise and openly celebrated his victory once the results were known.

Through his account on the social network X, Milei wrote: "One more step for our region in defense of life, liberty, and private property. I'm sure we'll work together so that America embraces the ideas of liberty and we can free ourselves from the oppressive yoke of 21st-century socialism."

Meanwhile, Kast's circle quickly reciprocated the sentiment. As soon as the runoff results were confirmed, the Chilean president-elect ended his message with a phrase commonly used by the Argentine leader: "Viva la libertad, carajo."

He also publicly stated that one of his goals will be to "strengthen the relationship" between Chile and the Argentine Republic, a relationship that, although it has remained stable institutionally in recent years, has not had explicit political alignment.

Chile's Election

The election in Chile was marked by high voter turnout. More than 15.7 million people went to the polls under the mandatory voting system, in an election that marked a shift to the right after nearly two decades of left-leaning governments. Kast's victory, with almost 60% of the votes against the official candidate Jeannette Jara, consolidated that change in direction.

At the Casa Rosada, the result was celebrated as part of a regional political realignment. Officials close to the presidency highlight, in addition to the victory in Chile, the political situation in Peru under the presidency of José Jeri, the recent inauguration of Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia, which ended MAS's hegemony, and the good relationship with Paraguayan president Santiago Peña.

In this context, at Balcarce 50, officials believe Milei will become "the natural leader" of a regional ideological alliance, without a formal structure but with the capacity for political coordination.

This interpretation was reflected in a post by the Argentine president on Instagram, where he stated: "The left retreats. Liberty advances," accompanied by a regional map showing Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina in blue, while Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela appeared in red.

During his first speech after the victory, Kast outlined some of the priorities that will define his future administration. He announced a toughening of security policy, placed special emphasis on the deportation of more than 300,000 illegal immigrants, expressed his intention to move forward with the closure of the northern border, and promised to boost the Chilean economy.
