Chile chose its next president this Sunday in a runoff election strongly marked by political polarization and public concern over crime, irregular immigration, and the effects of communism.
The candidate from the conservative right, José Antonio Kast, achieved a landslide victory over the Communist Party's official candidate, Jeannette Jara, securing nearly 60% of the votes, thus becoming the country's new president-elect.
A total of 15.7 million people were eligible to vote in an election considered crucial for defining Chile's political direction. From the first official results, the trend was clearly favorable to Kast.
With 4.46% of the votes counted, the conservative candidate had reached 59.83% of the preferences, compared to Jara's 40.17%. As the count progressed, the lead remained virtually unchanged.
Kast mantuvo un 20% de ventaja durante toda la contienda
With 25.3% of the ballots counted, Kast maintained a lead of nearly 20 percentage points, which led media outlets and analysts to consider the runoff result consolidated and begin referring to him as president-elect.
The election day was characterized by a climate of high expectation and by a campaign focused on public security, organized crime, and illegal immigration. These issues were pillars of Kast's platform, who promised a tougher approach against crime, strengthened border control, and the restoration of order, messages that received broad support among voters.
At José Antonio Kast's headquarters, the first results sparked a wave of celebrations. His supporters followed the vote count with applause and chants as the conservative candidate's lead was confirmed. Leaders from his sector highlighted the result as a public endorsement of a project focused on security, stability, and economic growth.
El búnker de la comunista Jara se mantuvo en silencio y con caras largas desde el inicio del conteo
In contrast, the atmosphere at Jara's campaign headquarters was one of silence and tension. Supporters watched the vote count progress on a giant screen, without any signs of excitement.
The official candidate arrived at her headquarters in the Paris-Londres neighborhood of Santiago around 6:00 p.m., accompanied by her campaign team. A stage with a giant screen and a perimeter of barriers was set up at the site, from where Jara was expected to deliver her message after the final election result was announced.
Jara's defeat represents a severe blow to the communist administration, which sought to continue its political project with an agenda focused on disastrous social reforms, strengthening the role of the state, and expanding social rights.
With this result, José Antonio Kast is set to assume Chile's presidency in a scenario marked by high public expectations and deep challenges regarding security, social cohesion, and governance, in a country that enters this new political stage visibly divided after an intense and polarized electoral campaign.
