Riquelme's management is closely monitoring a Colombian goalkeeper and a Uruguayan one, although the main hurdle is freeing up foreign player spots to be able to add them before the 2026 World Cup.

Boca Juniors does not stop its activity in this transfer market and, while it defines who will be the next coach, the management led by Juan Román Riquelme is advancing in the search for a top-tier goalkeeper to strengthen the squad for the second half of the year and the 2026 World Cup.

Among the names that are being mentioned, two players who have been performing well at their clubs stand out: Álvaro Montero and Sergio Rochet.

The Colombian, currently at Vélez, and the Uruguayan from Inter de Porto Alegre are the focus of attention for the xeneizes directors.

Montero received strong public support from Mauricio "Chicho" Serna, who highlighted him as a great goalkeeper and favorably compared him to historical references.

The two World Cup goalkeepers that Boca likes and the main obstacle to incorporating them - TyC SportsThe current situation of Álvaro Montero

During his time at Fortín, the goalkeeper played 17 matches, conceded only 13 goals, and achieved seven clean sheets. Those numbers led to his call-up to the Colombian national team for the World Cup.

In Liniers, they have not yet exercised the purchase option that is around one million dollars, and time is running out because the deadline to pay Millonarios is about to expire. This situation generates expectations in Boca, which has already made inquiries, although there is still no formal offer.

For his part, Rochet also shows solid form in Brazil. So far in 2026, he has played 17 matches, conceded 19 goals, and kept five clean sheets, establishing himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers on the continent.

Boca had already observed him in other markets and is now strongly interested again, especially since his contract with Inter expires in December.

The main obstacle: the foreign player quota

Despite the concrete interest, incorporating either of the two is not straightforward. Agustín Marchesín is still recovering from a serious knee injury, and Leandro Brey has not yet fully established himself as the undisputed starter. Therefore, the club needs to first resolve the issue of the foreign player quota.

In this regard, Marcelo Saracchi must return after his time at Celtic, and all indications are that he will seek a new exit. Additionally, Carlos Palacios has already explored the possibility of returning to Colo-Colo, and if a serious proposal comes in, the management would facilitate his departure.

These movements would be key to opening up space and being able to pursue Montero or Rochet without regulatory issues.

Boca's priority is clear: to add an experienced goalkeeper who provides security in goal for a demanding semester.

Expectations in the Xeneize

The interest in these two names is not coincidental. Both arrive at a good time and represent concrete options to elevate the level of the squad. Riquelme and his team are closely monitoring their contractual situations to attempt a significant move during this break.

Meanwhile, fans are eagerly awaiting decisions regarding the goalkeeping position, a sensitive area for any big team. The chance to add one of these World Cup players excites the Bombonera.
