The president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, announced on Tuesday the complete lifting of restrictions on cargo transit to Armenia, marking the first shipment of this kind since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The decision marks a concrete step in the implementation of the historic peace agreement signed in August under the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The shipment, consisting of grain from Kazakhstan, crossed Azerbaijan and Georgia to reach Armenia, showing a significant opening after more than three decades of conflict. "I believe this is proof that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia is no longer just an agreement on paper, but a practical reality," Aliyev stated, according to Azerbaijani state media.

The restoration of transit responds directly to the commitments made during the peace summit held at the White House last August 8, where President Trump acted as host and facilitator of the agreement.
During the ceremony, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a historic treaty that includes border openings, economic cooperation, and mutual respect for territorial sovereignty, after decades of clashes over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
One of the key elements of the agreement is the creation of a strategic transit corridor, known as TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity), which will connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia's Syunik province. This corridor will be developed by U.S. companies under an exclusive regime for 99 years.
The spokesperson for Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, welcomed the measure as "a step of great importance to open regional communications, strengthen mutual trust, and institutionalize peace."

Armenia has also made progress on one of the most sensitive points of the agreement: a constitutional reform that explicitly recognizes Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, a condition that Baku considers essential to formally close the conflict.
President Trump, who in 2025 seeks to position himself once again as a key figure in foreign policy, has made the Armenia-Azerbaijan agreement one of his main recent diplomatic achievements. "This is true peace, built on trade, security, and mutual respect," he stated during the signing in Washington.
The agreement also has deep geopolitical implications. With Russian trade routes weakened by the war in Ukraine, the Caucasus is gaining importance as a key energy and logistics corridor between Asia and Europe. Washington seeks to consolidate its presence in the region, while limiting the influence of Moscow and Tehran.
