Six months after his historic goal against the club from La Ribera, the Auckland City defender reappeared in a viral video and didn't hesitate to choose between the two giants
During 2025 there was a name that, against all odds, burst onto Argentine soccer without belonging to it:Christian Gray. The 28-year-old defender fromAuckland City, who is also a physical education teacher, wasthe scorer of the historic 1-1 against Boca in the Club World Cup, a moment that was recorded as one of the most unusual in the tournament.
Almost six months after that episode, Gray reappeared in the headlines for a different reason. The influencer and River fan@gianvella_ traveled from Australia to New Zealand to meet the unexpected protagonist of that unusual page of the tournament. In that meeting, the question was direct:Boca or River?.
"I received a lot of support from River fans, obviously. I was able to meet many Boca fans after the match and most of them, actually all of them, were very good people. But because you're here, I'm going to say River", he commented.
What is curious is that this statement contradicts what he had said a few months earlier, when his name had just exploded in Argentina. At that time, the defender had chosen the other side of the divide: "I'm going to say Boca. The fans were very respectful and showed their support throughout the match, that is what I appreciate about Boca, the support was unbelievable. We all know how big Boca is, the history it has. We have a lot of respect for the quality of the club".
Gray knows that most Argentine fans will not see him play again, but he also knows that his name was etched in their memory. He himself described it that way after that goal: "It was a dream and the truth is that it was a bit surprising because I normally don't score goals, butthere were many happy feelings. I think that the best word to describe it issurreal".
Gray calificó su gol como surrealista
Today, while he continues teaching classes in Auckland, his story keeps traveling across Argentina: anamateur teacher who, with an unexpected header, earned an eternal place in soccer's collective imagination.
