After a 2025 that left sporting frustration, River intends to begin 2026 with changes on all fronts. While Marcelo Gallardo is working to give the team a new identity during the preseason, the board is aiming for a strategic announcement: the expansion and roofing of the Estadio Monumental.
According to journalist Gustavo Yarroch on Radio La Red, the institution plans to announce this new stage of construction work between the end of January and the beginning of February, a time when River will already be playing the first matches of the 2026 Torneo Apertura. The structural renovation aims to reinforce the Monumental's status (currently with capacity for 85,018 spectators) as the largest football venue in South America.
According to that report, the expansion could increase the capacity to 100,000 seats, which would bring the stadium closer to the global podium of football venues with the largest capacity. Another key detail is that, despite the magnitude of the work, the team would not need to move to play its home matches, since the construction work would be carried out while sporting activity continues.
