Tourism in Catamarca: five essential experiences in the foothills

Between Fiambalá and Tinogasta there are five must-see stops for tourists

In the heart of the Catamarcan foothills, extreme landscapes and cultural identity converge in a tourist route that captivates those seeking adventure, relaxation, and tradition.

Between Fiambalá and Tinogasta, there are five must-see stops: the stunning Balcón del Pissis, the highest dunes in South America, the hot springs nestled in the mountains, the historic Adobe Route, and the unique Museum of Flavor.

Balcón del Pissis: extreme nature at over 4,700 meters

125 kilometers from Fiambalá and over 4,700 meters above sea level, Balcón del Pissis offers a unique view of multicolored lagoons reflecting the imposing Pissis volcano, one of the highest peaks in the Los Seismiles region. This place is home to vicuñas, guanacos, and high Andean flamingos (parinas), which can be seen when temperatures rise.

Access is possible year-round —weather conditions permitting— and is done in 4x4 vehicles with authorized guides.  Entry is allowed until 10 a.m., and staying is permitted until 2 p.m., with spring and summer being the ideal seasons for visiting.

Fiambalá Dunes: adventure on sand

In the Catamarcan desert, the Tatón dunes and the Magical Dune of Saujil are the perfect setting for sandboarding. Tours depart from Fiambalá, although it's also possible to arrive with your own vehicle. Boards can be rented at shops located near the main square.

The best time to visit them is in the morning. It is recommended to check the weather and road conditions before setting out, as rain can make access difficult.

Fiambalá Hot Springs: relaxation in the mountains

Ideal for recharging energy, the Fiambalá thermal complex has 14 natural stone pools with temperatures ranging from 28°C to 45°C (82°F to 113°F). Its waters are renowned for their healing properties.

Located just 12 kilometers from the village of Fiambalá, these hot springs can be enjoyed during three daily sessions: morning, afternoon, and night. Tickets are purchased at the Fiambalá Tourism Secretariat office, in front of the main square. Admission is free for children under six and people with disabilities.

Adobe Route: 300 years of living history

The Adobe Route connects Fiambalá with Tinogasta over nearly 50 kilometers, passing by churches, chapels, and mansions built with ancestral techniques. Most sites are open all day, except the Oratorio de los Orquera, which can be visited from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3 to 7 p.m.

The tour can be done with local guides or self-guided with information available on Google Maps. At key points like La Falda and Anillaco, crafts and regional products are offered.

Museum of Flavor: gastronomy with identity

Located in front of the main square of Tinogasta, the Museum of Flavor is an old adobe house converted into an interactive space that explores the flavors of Catamarca. Its six rooms offer a sensory experience that combines images, stories, and typical recipes.
