ChatGPT began rolling out a new age prediction system for personal-use accounts. The measure seeks to strengthen the protection of minors and limit access to sensitive content.
The change is already generating debate, since those who are identified as under 18 years old could face automatic restrictions. In some cases, they may be forced to verify their age with a selfie.

The system, announced by OpenAI in September 2025, classifies users into two groups: over 18 years old and under 18. To do this, it combines different usage indicators.

System errors and selfie verification
As is the case with similar systems, age prediction isn't infallible. In cases where ChatGPT can't clearly determine the age, the system will assign the under 18 category by default.
If an adult is misclassified, he or she will have to verify his or her age by sending a selfie through Persona, an external identity verification service. Only then will he or she be able to regain full access.

Availability
OpenAI indicated in advance that the age prediction system will arrive in the European Union in the coming weeks.
Users can check whether their account has been limited by going to Settings > Account. There it will indicate whether there are active restrictions.
