A chilling scene in New Mexico
The release of this video was due to a state regulation that requires the release of official audiovisual content upon request. Although the family tried to prevent its publication, the Sheriff's Office clarified that they legally couldn't deny the request.
Deplorable conditions inside the residence

The agents went through every corner of the house and documented an alarming state: accumulated trash, scattered clothes, containers, boxes, medications, and expired food covered the rooms. The most critical scene was recorded in the bathroom, where one of the family's dogs died of dehydration inside a cage. The photos released earlier reinforced the picture of neglect: the general disorder created unsanitary conditions that favored the proliferation of rodents. A subsequent report described the house as a "breeding ground" for hantavirus, given the level of rat infestation. The causes of death and autopsy results
Forensic results showed that Betsy Arakawa died on February 12 due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a disease transmitted by the saliva, urine, or droppings of rodents. Gene Hackman, meanwhile, died on the 18th of that month after a week of wandering alone through the house, disoriented and without care, due to the advanced Alzheimer's he suffered from. Cardiac complications ended his life. Although the bodies were found on February 26, their deaths occurred several days earlier, as confirmed by the authorities.
