The leader of the Chilean Communist Party had a poor performance and will face José Antonio Kast in the runoff

In a high-turnout election day, the Communist Party candidate and former Minister of Labor, Jeannette Jara, failed to stand out in the first round of the presidential elections against a fragmented right wing. However, thanks to the votes from the ruling coalition, she has secured her place in the runoff against the leader of the Republican right, José Antonio Kast.
The performance of the communist candidate has been interpreted as an absolute failure for the ruling coalition, given that the right arrived at the elections divided and still could not be outperformed. The leftist candidate managed to capitalize on only 26% of the votes, while the right as a whole garnered around 70% of the electorate.
Jara carried out a crude campaign focused on social rights, strengthening the State, and an economic model based on innovation, productive diversification, and sustainability.

One of the central pillars of her platform is the disastrous comprehensive pension reform. The proposal envisions a system in which fiscal risk would be completely elevated and private savings could be absolutely wiped out.
Her labor agenda, centered on collective bargaining and the consolidation of the 40-hour workweek, has also been the subject of debate. While unions celebrate these measures, several business associations warn about negative impacts on productivity and job creation.
Likewise, she is criticized for lacking a clear strategy to address informality, a growing problem in the Chilean labor market.
In economic matters, Jara has tried to present herself as open to dialogue with the private sector, but her opponents argue that her vision of strengthening state-owned enterprises in strategic areas could drive away many important investments.

Meanwhile, centrist and right-wing sectors, as well as the population, accuse her of not offering sufficient guarantees of regulatory stability, especially in key industries such as lithium and green hydrogen. Her campaign team has replied that such criticisms seek to "spread fear" and that her platform aims for balanced, innovative, and sustainable development.
In contrast, José Antonio Kast managed to consolidate the vote of the more traditional right and of groups demanding greater public order, a smaller State, and a market-centered economic recovery. His advance to the runoff and the superiority that markets show in the same reaffirm the persistence of a deep ideological superiority in the Chilean electorate, which anticipates a second round with a significant advantage for the right-wing candidate.
After the results were confirmed, Jara showed clear signs of frustration after not being able to achieve even a result that would position her with good expectations ahead of the second round to be held next December 14.

Looking ahead to the runoff, the contest between Jara and Kast is projected as one of the most defining since the return to democracy, confronting two deeply different models for the country.
The ruling coalition candidate must now try to broaden her support base and convince moderate progressive voters, while Kast will seek to consolidate the right and attract even more those who demand a shift toward order and state austerity.
