Córdoba: controlled demolition begins after tragic collapse in Güemes neighborhood

Three weeks after the collapse, the municipality authorized actions to ensure safety following the fatal detachment

During the early hours of Saturday, May 17, part of the masonry of a building at 600 San Juan Boulevard, Güemes neighborhood, collapsed. The collapse caused the death of Ramiro Alanis Cortés and injuries to seven people who were at the Posto bar on the ground floor.

Now, the Municipality of Córdoba has ordered the consortium to submit a plan within 24 hours to ensure the stability of party walls and facades. The plan includes debris removal, risk assessment, and remediation work in response to detected technical failures. Thus, controlled demolition has begun from the top of the building, under professional supervision, to prevent further detachments and expand the safe area.

The company in charge of the controlled demolition explained that the work "for now will all be done by hand, with great caution." Similarly, Demoliciones Brasca added: "the estimated timeframe is 15 to 30 days, but it depends on what we find as we move forward." They also emphasized that this schedule is subject to change and that demolition will begin this Monday.

In addition to the economic and material damage, the incident caused serious complications in vehicular traffic. Some bus lines had to change their usual routes due to the imposed restrictions. Those traveling by car must use alternative detours to enter or leave the city center.

The judiciary continues to investigate responsibilities

The operation is being carried out under judicial supervision, since the investigation led by the Public Prosecutor's Office is still ongoing. Possible failures in the construction and maintenance of the building are being analyzed, as well as the actions of the consortium and technical managers.

Until then, the area remains cordoned off and closed to traffic due to the risk of falling materials during the execution of the work. Meanwhile, municipal officials stated that "there were professionals who failed here. The municipality only requires that repairs be carried out safely." Thus, Passerini seeks to distance himself from any type of responsibility.
