Córdoba steps up speed controls with sanctions starting in August

Fines may reach $315,000 and vehicle impoundments will also be applied depending on the severity of the offense

The Municipality of Córdoba will implement a new speed control operation in different areas of the city. The main objective of the measure is to reduce the number of traffic accidents and promote safer driving. The actions will be carried out by the Secretariat of Urban Mobility and will begin with an informational stage.

During the first two weeks, offenders will be notified through CIDI without receiving financial penalties. Starting in August, fines ranging from $52,000 to $315,000 will be applied, with the possibility of vehicle impoundment. The Municipality will use speed cameras and specific equipment to detect speeding.

The devices will be located on main roads and areas with high vehicle traffic. Controls will also be added in areas near schools, hospitals, and spaces with a large pedestrian presence. According to the Municipality, the operations will be permanent and will extend to different neighborhoods of the city.

Traffic accidents: alarming figures in the city

Speeding was identified as one of the main causes of accidents recorded in Córdoba. "Most drivers do not respect the parameters when driving," stated the Secretary of Government, Rodrigo Fernández. He also specified that "six people die per month in the city due to traffic accidents, and the essential reason is speeding."

According to the most recent Road Mortality Report, in 2023 there were 73 fatalities due to traffic accidents in the city. Half were between 10 and 29 years old, 60% were motorcyclists, and 20% were pedestrians. The statistics reflect a high incidence of these events among the young population and vulnerable users.

A 2024 study conducted by Johns Hopkins University and Conicet revealed that 58% of drivers exceed the permitted limits. This information supported the Municipality's decision to intensify controls. Authorities expect the measure to help reduce accidents in the short and medium term.

Comprehensive controls and awareness campaigns

In addition to detecting speeding, inspectors will check other requirements when stopping a vehicle. The validity of the driver's license, compliance with the ITV, and, if deemed necessary, a breathalyzer test will be conducted. Authorities seek to establish a comprehensive approach to improve road safety.

In parallel with the operations, awareness campaigns aimed at promoting responsible habits will be developed. These actions will seek to raise awareness about the consequences of speeding and non-compliance with regulations. The Secretariat of Urban Mobility emphasized that the preventive approach will be sustained over time.

The control devices will be strategically distributed to reach different areas of the city. The Municipality stressed that priority will be given to places with the highest traffic and pedestrian concentration. The work scheme will be rotating and will be updated periodically based on recorded behavior.

The established speeds for driving in the city of Córdoba are:

• 20 km/h (12 mph) at level crossings

• Speeds below 30 km/h (19 mph) at intersections, and near schools, sports facilities, and areas with high attendance

• 40 km/h (25 mph) on streets

• 60 km/h (37 mph) on avenues

• 60 km/h (37 mph) on roads crossing urban areas
